Treasure Hunters and puzzle buffs are an obsessive-compulsive breed in that they have a strong need for closure - they need to complete what they have started.  Whether this be a jigsaw puzzler who persists until the last piece is in place, a crossword buff, or someone who solves cryptograms, all have one thing in common.  The satisfaction derived from completion is more important than the picture, the obscure words in the crossword, or the inane phrases that comprise most cryptograms.  The probable few hundred who stuck with TREASURE to the end certainly had this quality and still have the need for further closure with this puzzle.

The actual solution to the puzzle certainly helped, but there were so many more clues, and at least one other path one could follow.  I hope to help resolve some of the need for closure by providing what I believe to be an actual and intentional alternative (though apparently wrong) solution to the puzzle.  Dr. Crypton spent a great deal of effort leading the puzzled entrants down a long circuitous path usually reserved for a wild goose.  This path ended on a hilltop in northeastern Connecticut and was, I believe, a "red herring" designed to draw us off the actual path.

After reaching a brick wall I managed to interest a friend named Chuck who was a mechanical engineer.  His background leant a very different view of clues, mine being more literary and historical, and together we managed to make considerable progress, or so we thought.  I worked on the puzzle from the time it was first published to the night before the deadline.

Long ago I filed my notes on the treasure hunt in my attic.  I brought them out one more time to illustrate the logic that Chuck and I applied to the problem and to contribute to the body of knowledge on the subject now available on the Internet.  Feel free to contact me if you want clarification of any points.

Enjoy!

Our "Solution"

The Starting Point

bullet

At first, we struggled with the clue regarding the words on page 19, "To find your Treasure you first must find your father's grave."  The illustration on page 21 showed the name "KNUTSEN" on a gravestone and the date of June 11, 1980.  Amanda placed a single red rose on the base of the headstone.  An old definition of a rose is the design on a compass - thereby telling us to place a compass at this point.  The date on the gravestone is June 11, 1980 and by adding the digits of this date (6+1+1+1+9+8+0) one comes up with the number 26 (the starting point).  The 26th parallel crosses only two states - Florida and the bottom tip of Texas at Brownsville.  Brownsville was the most distinct reference point, the other being Hollywood, Florida.

bullet

The only other number we had at this point was 45 which we obtained by subtracting two numbers that appeared on an umbrella in the illustration on page 71 (1587 minus 1542).  The umbrella somewhat resembled a globe with latitude and longitude lines.  It now appears that these numbers are also the birth and death dates of Mary Queen of Scots in the Castaneda/Nemo solution.

bullet

Drawing lines 45 degrees northeast and northwest from the 26th parallel in Brownsville and Hollywood, we scanned the states and towns which each line intersected.  Heading northeast from Brownsville, the line intersected Fisher's Island off the Connecticut coast.  On page 1 of the book, an acrostic using the last letters of the last word of each line and reading up the page says "seek pg  pnedd".  Add the numeric counterparts of the letters p+n+e+d+d (16+14+5+4+4) and one ends up with 43.  On page 43 is a picture of a lighthouse. This clue was also substantiated by an illustration of a fish biting the letter "R" (Fish-R) on page 29 of the book, and in the video (Chapter 10) by the registration number on an abandoned boat on a beach (G200CK).  When the letter "G" is assigned its numeric counterpart (7th letter), it reads 7200 CK, which we interpreted to be longitude "72.00 seek" (phonetic pronunciation of CK).  Fisher's Island falls at 72.00 degrees longitude.  In the video, Amanda climbs the steps of a lighthouse, walks onto a balcony and faces 8:00 (or 60 degrees southwest).

The Road to Orange

bullet

The video was most helpful in moving from Fisher's Island to the next point.  A dance sequence was augmented with vignettes showing close-ups of Amanda's feet as she walked.  Her steps in the vignette added to 64 but were broken up into 39 steps and 25 steps.  With her 39th step, she stepped on a stick in the sand.  The stick resembled the shape of Long Island with its two arms beckoning toward Fisher's Island.

bullet

On a map we drew a line 39 miles long from Fisher's Island (60 degrees southwest) down Long Island.  With 25 miles left, we didn't know which way to go, so we drew an arc 25 miles long.  The arc crossed only Long Island and the southern portion of Connecticut.  We scanned the towns it intersected and realized that Orange, Connecticut was a likely candidate.  The color orange had a major role in the movie with various scenes outlined by alternating orange and green frames.  In the Courtyard scene in the video, Amanda appears to be served orange juice instead of tea, when poured from a teapot; but when she drinks it, it looks like tea.

bullet

Much scouring of the area convinced us that the yellow horse wasn't buried on or near the Orange town green.  The sushi-like illustration on page 32 shows a black band crossing diagonally over the colors orange and green.  This told us that the treasure was not located near the town green in Orange.  We still believed we were right.  The biggest confirmation that we were on the right track was when we entered the graveyard in the center of town.  One of the first graves we noticed next to the road through the cemetery had the name KNUDSEN (with a "D" instead of a "T").

NO Orange Green                                                               Knudsen Grave in Orange

The Way to Go Forward is Sometimes to Go Back

bullet

Stumped, we returned to the video dance sequence.  As often was the case with this puzzle, there were double clues within the same scene.  The vignettes were broken up into five groups comprising 8, 9, 14, 8, and 25 steps respectively.  Early in the sequence, the dancers appeared to point in different directions with their feet - East, North, East, South, East.  Since the number of vignettes corresponded with the number of directions given, we plotted the distance from Orange - East 8, North 9, East 14, South 8, East 25.  This put us in the middle of Long Island Sound not too far from Fisher's Island.  Near the end of the sequence the dancers joined hands and pointed northwest.

 The (Wrong) Solution is Elementary

bullet

The number 32 had a major role in our "solution".  The credits at the end of the movie, which many people never read, provided an important clue as twenty-eight letters were highlighted mostly in orange or green.  After double-checking this recently it appears that one T seem more Red and the following I could be Brown.  When these letters are placed in the boxes along the border of the map the following message appears:

A R G O S C N S A D I S E R E D R A T E L T I R E G H B

bullet

This looked to us (pronounced phonetically) like:

Argosy 'n Sad Eyes Red Radial Tire G H B

We speculated the horse might be buried under the inside circle of a red radial tire - or when you found the tire you would get sad eyes because it wasn't there.  Argosy (a large ship) might be a reference to the journey of Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece on the ship Argo.  In Chapter 18 (Rehearsal) in the video there is a reference to tires - the young woman walks under an archway with the word "ARMSTRONG" spelled out  in lights with radials projecting from the letters.

bullet

When the arrows on the map are connected to the box to which they point, a message is phonetically spelled out "ANSER AT LRB" = "ANSWER AT LRB" (sum of numerical position of L+R+B = 32).

The Arrow Message

bullet

The last three letters - G H B - don't seem to be phonetically meaningful.  The B is needed for the "Anser at LRB" message.  The G and H could have been any two letters.  What their meaning is escapes me but I find it hard to believe Dr. Crypton would not have used the opportunity to make them meaningful.

bullet

One of the names in the credits - Jim Cypherd - provided more information.  The sum of numerical position of the letters in the word "Jim" add to 32.  Hence, 32 was a cipher.  A simple transposition was made with 3 equal to the letter "C" and 2 equal to the letter "B".

bullet

"Cb" resembled a natural element symbol and some quick checking of an older Table of Elements found it to be the symbol for Columbium (in recent years called niobium).  Further confirmation was found in the book where two chopsticks are shown across pages 31 and 32.  If one continues straight lines from the chopsticks, they intersect under the page number - 32.  Again scanning the towns northwest of where we had stopped in Long Island Sound, we found a charming little town named Columbia - 23 degrees Northwest at a distance of 32 miles.

Southeast of 32

Charity Begins with "C" but Ends with "T"

bullet

The center of Columbia lies at the intersection of routes 66 and 87.  An historic Indian school (founded by clergyman Eleazar Wheelock and forerunner to Dartmouth College) is located north of this intersection.  This 200 year old historic landmark is named Moor's Indian Charity School and we believe was referenced in the credits of the movie with what we believed to be the contrived name of the Special Photographer and Special Effects Director - Kees Van Oostrum.  Reading this name backwards spells an abbreviated message - "Mur T So on Av Seek" or spelled out - "Moor (Chari)ty south on avenue seek".

bullet

Next, we headed south on route 87 through a section called Chestnut Hill toward an area called Liberty Hill.  An ancient cemetery with headstones worn from the elements lies there and again we received confirmation.  In the video credits, one of the names read Barbara Crear.  While this could be an actual person, we interpreted it as "Barbara see rear".  The last credit reads "Special thanks to Barr B. Potter."  Assuming that Barr B. or Barbie referred to Barbara, we made note of the name "Potter" and were rewarded when we found a gravestone in the Liberty Hill cemetery with the name Potter, in the rear of the cemetery.

Double Trouble

bullet

The horse named Treasure appears only a few times in the movie - at the beginning and at the end, and most importantly to us, running along the side of a cemetery.  At other times when horses are seen, they are stand-ins and are credited at the end of the film.  The markings on their feet differentiate the horses from one another.  In the book, the horse named Treasure is shown running east along the edge of a cemetery.  At the Liberty Hill Cemetery, an old path lined with stone walls lies hidden from the road and runs along the side of the cemetery in an easterly direction.

Dashed Line is Path from Cemetery

Dashes and Dots in Vertical Direction Represent Power Lines

Too Many Cooks

bullet

The path heads east for about 20 minutes walk and ends  underneath a chain of electric power lines.  Two sets of lines run along an overgrown meadow.  Each set was supported by two poles with a very large "X" supporting them.  If "X" marked the spot, then we had plenty to choose from as there were 60 "X" supports on this hill.  The video provides strong allusions to electric power - showing hydro-electric dams, windmills, and power lines outside the rehearsal hall where the dancers were practicing.  One illustration in the book shows birds flying end-to-end in a straight line at the top of arches and resembling power lines.  Also, on page 63 - 64, it was written, "She opened a slender gate guarding a passageway.  As she did this, the record's song gave way to a truer current in the air" (my italics).

Power Lines Rising Up Commons Hill

bullet

In the film version, only one character speaks throughout the entire movie - a man named Mr. Maps that was played by Elisha Cook, Jr.  Besides the very beginning and very end of the film, this scene is also the only one in which the map appears, hidden inside a spinning globe.  The book highlights only two identifiable characters other than Amanda - one is a Cook (Elisha), the other is a chef!  Examination of a topographical map revealed that we were on Commons Hill, which is very near to Cook's Hill.  Cook's Hill appeared to be private property and we could find no public access to it.  The word "Common" appears on one of the maps in Chapter 9 of the video, so we pushed on - searching Commons Hill.

The Map is the Key in More Ways than One

bullet

The map is used in a variety of ways.  One already mentioned was the arrows pointing to the blocks in the border spelling the message regarding "32".

bullet

Two of the markings on the map, which didn't make sense to us, were two small, seemingly stray lines.  We decided to determine where they intersected (much like the chopsticks).  They intersected off the map proper - now there were two X's, one on and one off the map.  Using the border blocks as a scale, the two X's were 25 blocks apart.  We believed one of the X's was a reference point; the other was the location of the golden horse.  The concept of using an area off the map as an integral part of the map was initially difficult to accept.  However, upon reading an article by Dr. Crypton regarding breaking out of a mindset and looking beyond the established borders of a puzzle, I believed we were probably correct.

Two X's

The End of the Trail

bullet

This is the point at which we lost the trail.  The only reference points on Commons Hill are the electric poles or the cross bars supporting them.  We measured off from many of the 60 potential points and scanned these areas with an inexpensive metal detector, of course, to no avail.  Many additional clues lend support to our theory about this area including a backward acrostic across pages 22 and 21 of the book spelling out "reefer seed" (Colombian Gold?).

bullet

In the video (Chapter 21 - Horse) Amanda picks up a horse of "earthen color laying under a chain."  A short while after, the narrator says," In the meadow the horse was waiting for her."  We believed the horse was under a chain of electric power lines and poles in the meadow on top of Commons Hill.

Salting the Wound

bullet

Dr. Crypton was quite bold in taunting and teasing us on a grand scale.  On the last page of his book, he ends with a short poem, which is actually an acrostic and rebus identifying the state where the red herring was "buried":

Take all the clues, hidden herein

Combine them and take their full measure

It's time for your search to begin

It may lead you to Treasure.

bullet

Using the beginning of each line, we interpreted it to be "It's (under) CT".  The end of each line gives the initials of the area of the country (New England) and/or the region in the state where the red herring was hidden - North East, North East.

bullet

The dust jacket illustration on one of his other books entitled Timid Virgins Make Dull Company (published in 1984, the same year as TREASURE) taunts the would-be Treasure hunter with a rebus and coded message.  It is a bizarre illustration showing a human figure with numbers for facial features and a maze on top of the head.  Out of the orange maze are growing green plants sprouting letters and numbers.  The individual digits of the facial numbers add either to 26 if the cheek numbers are sixes, or to 32 if they are nines.  More importantly, the numeric associations of the three letters (X, R, V) in the green sprouts add up to 64.  The alphabetic associations for the numbers in the green sprouts (2, 5, 7) spell the word "BEG" (second, fifth and seventh letters of the alphabet).  Remember the number of steps to Orange, Connecticut from Fisher's Island?  It was 39+25=64.  This was a cruel joke from Dr. Crypton taunting us with the message in letters, numbers and colors - "64 (miles) to green in Orange - Beg"!

bullet

One more thing.  Dr. Crypton was responsible for creating the treasure map in the hit movie Romancing The Stone.  In the film the map was folded to reveal an illustration, and the valued gemstone itself was buried in Colombia, South America!  We were unsuccessful in our attempts to fold the TREASURE map to create something meaningful but I am not convinced that it isn't a technique that Dr. Crypton built into the puzzle.

Meadow on Top of Commons Hill

bullet

I wouldn't be surprised if something is buried on Commons Hill but it's not the gold horse - maybe a bronze or silver or clay or even a plastic one. With it will be a container and parchment that will taunt the finder with a message reading something like:

"Congratulations.  Your travails are over.  Your search is at an end.  Inside is one jar of pickled red herring."

A Few More Clues

Number 26 (Our starting point)

bullet

Not only did the father's grave add to 26, so did the grave date in the video that read "Shipwrecked October 18, 1915" (October being the tenth month).  Adding the digits (1+0+1+8+1+9+1+5) results in the sum of 26.

bullet

The rear license plate on Amanda's Mustang reads 26, while the front plate reads Dr Geese.  Dr. Geese is an anagram spelling degrees.

Allusions to Orange

Once you start looking at colors, orange seems to be all over the place, for example:

bullet

In Chapter 2 of the video, Amanda's bed sheets are bright orange.

bullet

In the Mr. Maps sequence of the video there are alternating green and orange frames on the frames in the air.

bullet

In the Courtyard scene (Chapter 20) in the video as the waiter is pouring what appears to be orange juice into her cup, Amanda's bracelet is dark blue or black.  But a few seconds later when she is opening the fortune from the fortune cookie her bracelet is clearly orange.

bullet

In the credits at the end of the video various letters are highlighted in green or orange.

Other Columbia Clues and the Number 32 (Cipher for Cb {Columbium})

bullet

The 2 dice in Chapter 5 (Fortune) in the video stopped rolling with a 3 on top of one and a 2 on the other.

bullet

In the shadow cast by the large capital letter E on page 65, the letters in the shadow form an acrostic that reads (going down) - "a t  c  c t".  Could it refer to Columbia, Connecticut? We believed it did.

bullet

In the Mr. Maps sequence in the video, the most obvious map is that of South America.  We believed it is was there as a reminder that Colombia is in South America.

bullet

One of the credits at the end of the  video referred to T ' Boo.  I interpreted this to be T (treasure) 32 (b+o+o=2+15+15=32)

bullet

In Chapter XXX of the video the image of Columbia (sometimes called Miss Liberty), as in Columbia Records and Columbia Pictures, appears on the above the phonograph.

 Support for the Electricity Theory

bullet

On page 31 in the book, there are six men sitting.  Behind them is a grid of sorts.  If you hold the page up to the light, on the reverse page the vertical line intersect letters, specifically, H K O M D C E.  It may be an anagram for OHM DECK and may subtly refer to electricity on a raised level (much like that seen on Commons Hill).

bullet

In the video (Chapter 21 - Horse), Amanda enters her father's workshop "where time has truly stopped."  In the workshop are old tools - anvil, hand-drills, etc.  As Amanda starts to pick up her father coat there are hand-drills and what appears to be wood chisels in back of her.  When she brings the coat up to her face, they are no longer in the background and on the workbench is a very modern electrical device.  It is totally out of place.

A Few Miscellaneous Observations

bullet

On page XXX of the book there is a butterfly or moth showing the image of a jack-o-lantern or a witch.

A Few Observations About the Book

bullet

The book is designed to be taken apart.  I am a purveyor of used and rare books, and have never seen a binding that is perforated in the manner this one was.  Usually, perforated pages are used for classroom workbooks and the like.  The pages are meant to be re-organized and held up to the light for images on one side of a page relating to images on the other.

bullet

There is a missing page.  Either page 13 or 14 is missing (I suspect it is 13 to avoid bad luck, much like a high rise building may not have a thirteenth floor).  Following this theme in his book Timid Virgins Make Dull Company, Dr. Crypton skipped Chapter 13, numbering them from 1-12 and jumping to 14.

bullet

There is wide variation in the layout of the various pages of the book.  For example, most of the large letters at the beginning of chapters have shadows.  In some of the shadows appear to be messages:
bullet

Chapter 11 - Hole n it (Hole in it)

bullet

Chapter 17 - At c ct (At Columbia Connecticut)

bullet

The page numbers themselves have either left number higher, or right number higher.  Though I never actually determined the exact meaning, I'm sure they have some significance.  Book designers don't usually do things like that.

bullet

Also of interest is the fact that the book designer (Laurie Handler of COY) was acknowledged in the front of the book.  Very seldom are book designers acknowledged in this manner.

The End of the Search
